Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at opening (10:00 AM) are consistently the quietest. Weekday afternoons are busier. Avoid weekend afternoons and school holiday periods. The Jerónimos entrance on the north side of the building typically has the shortest queues.
A highlights visit covering Las Meninas, The Garden of Earthly Delights and the Goya rooms takes 2 to 3 hours. To explore the collection broadly, over 8,000 works spanning seven centuries, plan for 4 to 5 hours.
Las Meninas by Velázquez is in Room 012. The Garden of Earthly Delights by Bosch is in Room 056A. Saturn Devouring His Son by Goya is in Room 067. The Third of May 1808 by Goya is in Room 064.
Photography is not permitted in the permanent galleries — but ArtGuide lets you type or say the artwork name instead, so you can get the full narration without taking a photo. Pencil sketching is allowed; pens and markers are not. Large bags over 30x30 cm must be left in the free cloakroom at the entrance. Bring headphones.
